The Bent Woman: Daughter of Abraham

Women in the Bible

She had been bent for eighteen years.

Luke 13:11 describes her condition with quiet precision — a woman who had a spirit of infirmity, bent over and completely unable to straighten herself. Eighteen years of looking at the ground. Eighteen years of seeing only the earth beneath her feet, unable to lift her eyes to the horizon, unable to stand fully upright in her own body. Eighteen years of carrying what should never have been hers to carry.

And she came to the synagogue on the Sabbath anyway.

We are not told she came looking for healing. We are not told she pushed through the crowd or cried out for Jesus’s attention. She simply came — faithful, present, showing up in the house of God despite eighteen years of unanswered suffering. And Jesus saw her.

He called her to Him. He laid His hands on her and said — “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” Luke 13:12. And immediately she straightened up and glorified God.

The synagogue ruler was indignant — there were six days for healing, he said, why come on the Sabbath? And Jesus answered him with words that carry the full weight of covenant love — “So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound — think of it — for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?” Luke 13:16.

Daughter of Abraham. That is what He called her. Not a burden. Not an interruption. Not a violation of the Sabbath rules. A daughter of the covenant, with every right to her healing, and not one day too soon.

Friend, perhaps you have been bent under something for longer than you can remember. Perhaps you have grown so accustomed to the weight that you have forgotten what it felt like to stand upright. Jesus saw this woman across a crowded synagogue and called her to Him — not because she fought her way to the front, but because He was looking for her.

He is still looking. And when He calls your name, what has bent you will have to let go.

Eighteen years of bondage ended in a moment. That is what His word does.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
