Love: The Heart of Everything

There is a love that surpasses every love this world has ever known. Not romantic love, not family love, not the warmth of friendship — though all of those are gifts from God. This love is deeper, wider, and higher than any of them. The Bible calls it agape love.

Agape is not a feeling. It is a decision — a choice to love regardless of who someone is or what they have done. It is the love God has for us, and it is the love we are called to have for one another.

The Apostle Paul paints its portrait in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7: “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil… bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (NKJV).

We see agape most perfectly in Jesus. He didn’t go to the cross because we deserved it — He went because He chose us, fully knowing us, fully loving us anyway. That is the staggering reality of Calvary.

And now He calls us to love one another the same way. Not just the people who are easy to love, but the neighbour who is difficult, the one who has hurt us, the one who may never love us back. Agape love does not wait for conditions to be right. It simply loves.

Friend, this kind of love is not something we can manufacture in our own strength. It flows from surrender — from allowing the Holy Spirit to pour the love of God through us into the lives of others. Romans 5:5 reminds us: “the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (NKJV).

So let us love — not just in words, but in action and in truth. Let us love as Christ loved us.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
