Joanna: Faithful in the Background, Present at the Miracle

Uncategorized, Women in the Bible

She had everything to lose.

Luke 8:3 introduces Joanna with a detail that changes the whole picture — she was the wife of Chuza, the household manager of Herod Antipas. This was not a woman from the margins of society. She was connected to the very court that had beheaded John the Baptist, the court that would later mock Jesus on the night of His trial. For Joanna to leave that world, travel openly with Jesus and His disciples, and support His ministry out of her own resources was not quiet background service — it was a calculated act of courage that put her social standing and possibly her safety at risk.

And she did it anyway.

Luke 8:1-3 tells us that Joanna was among the women who travelled with Jesus and the twelve, providing for the ministry from their own means. No fanfare. No title. No recorded sermon or miracle bearing her name. Just faithful, consistent, generous support — the kind that keeps a mission moving when nobody is watching.

But here is what faithfulness in the background produces. Luke 24:10 names Joanna among the women who went to the tomb on the morning of the resurrection — and found it empty. The same woman who had quietly funded the ministry was among the first human beings on earth to hear the words “He is not here, but is risen.” She was given a front-row seat to the most important moment in the history of the world.

Those who are faithful in the small things are always present when God does the great things.

Perhaps your contribution feels invisible. Perhaps you give, serve and pray in ways that nobody around you notices or acknowledges. Joanna’s story tells you — Heaven has noted every act of faithful generosity, every quiet yes, every resource laid down for the sake of the mission.

And when the resurrection moment comes — and it always comes — the faithful will be there.
