Dorcas: When a Life Speaks Louder Than Words

There are people whose absence is felt like a wound. Dorcas was one of those people.

Acts 9:36 introduces her with quiet simplicity — a disciple named Tabitha, which translated means Dorcas. She was full of good works and charitable deeds. In the city of Joppa she had given herself to one particular ministry: making clothing for the widows around her. No platform. No title. Just needle, thread, and a heart wide open to those the world had forgotten.

When she died, the widows didn’t just mourn her. They held up what she had made. They showed Peter the tunics and garments — tangible, physical evidence of a life poured out in love. Her works were still speaking after she was gone.

But God was not finished.

Peter cleared the room, knelt down, and prayed. Then he turned to the body and spoke three words that echo the voice of Jesus Himself — “Tabitha, arise.” Acts 9:40. And she opened her eyes, saw Peter, and sat up. The dead woman stood. And Acts 9:42 tells us what happened next — it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.

Her resurrection was not just personal. It was evangelism. God used one faithful woman’s restored life to bring a whole city to faith.

Friend, this is what the Holy Spirit does. He takes a life fully surrendered — even a quiet, unglamorous life of sewing and serving — and He makes it a testimony that cannot be ignored. You don’t have to be famous. You don’t have to be on a platform. You just have to be faithful with what is in your hands.

Dorcas was faithful with a needle and thread. God made her faithful with a resurrection.

What has He placed in your hands today?

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
