Deliverance: God Sets the Captive Free

General

Deliverance is not a minor theme in the Bible. It is woven through every book, every story, every covenant. From the Israelites in Egypt to the demon-possessed man in Mark 5, the message is consistent: God is in the business of setting people free.

Psalm 34:17 declares it without qualification: “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles” (NKJV). All their troubles. Not most. Not some. The scope of God’s deliverance is as wide as the cry that reaches His ears.

Sometimes we find ourselves bound — by addiction, by fear, by past sin, by patterns we cannot seem to break. The chains feel real because they are real. But so is the God who breaks them. In Galatians 5:1, Paul makes the declaration plainly: “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage” (NKJV). Christ has already made us free. The question is whether we will stand in it.

Deliverance is not always instantaneous, though sometimes it is. Often it is a process — a daily leaning into the power of the Holy Spirit, a daily choice to stand in the freedom Christ purchased. What never changes is the One who delivers. He does not grow weary of hearing you cry out. He does not tire of setting the captive free.

The psalmist who wrote Psalm 40 understood the waiting: “I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry” (Psalm 40:1, NKJV). He inclined to me. God leaned in to listen. He will lean in to you.

Friend, whatever has you bound, cry out. He hears. He delivers. And the freedom He gives is not fragile — it is the liberty of the Son of God.

May God’s delivering power set you free and keep you free today. Amen.
