Barak: When God Calls You and Your Knees Knock

He was a soldier. He was Israel’s commander. He was the one God called by name.
And he still asked the prophetess to come with him.
“And Barak said to her, ‘If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go!'” (Judges 4:8, NKJV).
That is not the line of a hero in a Sunday school poster. That is the line of a man whose courage was thinner than his calling. God had spoken plainly through Deborah — go, deploy ten thousand men against Sisera’s chariots, I will deliver him into your hand. And Barak, hearing the very promise of God, still answered, “Only if you come too.”
Deborah went. She did not shame him. She did not preach at him. She simply said yes — and then she told him the truth.
“I will surely go with you; nevertheless there will be no glory for you in the journey you are taking, for the Lord will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman” (Judges 4:9, NKJV).
There was a cost to his hesitation. The glory of the kill went to Jael, a woman with a tent peg and a hammer. The victory still came — but Barak’s name in the song that followed was forever sung beside Deborah’s, not above it.
And yet — here is the part I love — Hebrews 11 names Barak in the great hall of faith. Not Deborah. Not Jael. Barak. “And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets” (Hebrews 11:32, NKJV).
The man whose knees knocked still made the roster of the faithful.
Friend, hear me. Sometimes the Holy Spirit is going to ask you to do something and you will not feel ready. Your faith will look more like Barak’s than like David’s. You will need someone with you. You will need a prophetess in your corner. You will need to hold onto a word God spoke through somebody braver than you.
That is allowed.
The Kingdom of God is not a club for the fearless. It is a family of the obedient. And obedience — even trembling obedience — is what God writes into the hall of faith.
So go. Take the ten thousand. Take whoever you need to bring with you. And let the Lord sell the enemy into your hand.
He still does.
