Adonijah: When Ambition Won't Let Go
Some people never learn. And that, more than anything else, is what makes Adonijah’s story so sobering.
He was David’s fourth son — handsome, confident, and by the customs of the day, a natural candidate for the throne. His father had never rebuked him or crossed him in anything. And so when David was old and frail, Adonijah simply decided that the kingdom was his. He gathered chariots and horsemen, recruited supporters, and held a banquet to declare himself king — without ever once seeking God’s direction.
But God had already spoken. Solomon was His chosen king. And through the prophet Nathan and Bathsheba, David acted swiftly — Solomon was anointed, and Adonijah’s self-appointed coronation collapsed before it had truly begun.
Terrified, Adonijah fled to the altar and grabbed its horns, seeking sanctuary. Solomon showed him mercy. He sent him home with a warning — live quietly, cause no trouble, and your life will be spared.
It should have ended there.
But ambition, when it is rooted in pride rather than surrendered to God, rarely stays quiet for long. Adonijah came back — this time asking for Abishag, David’s attendant, as his wife. To Solomon, the meaning was unmistakable. A claim to the king’s household was a claim to the throne. Adonijah hadn’t changed. He had simply found a subtler path to the same destination.
This time, there was no mercy. His ambition finally cost him everything.
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18, NKJV).
Friend, God’s plan for your life is not a consolation prize. It is a gift — carefully, lovingly appointed by a Father who knows you better than you know yourself. When we stop straining after what was never ours and surrender to what He has actually called us to, we find something Adonijah never did.
We find peace.
Align your ambitions with His will. Trust His timing. And let Him do the appointing.
