Fruit of the Spirit – Goodness

sed quia consequuntur magni dolores
Goodness is more than being nice. It is more than doing good deeds or maintaining a good reputation. At its deepest level, goodness is a reflection of the very character of God — and when the Holy Spirit is at work in us, it becomes one of the most visible fruits of a Spirit-filled life.
The psalmist declares it plainly: “You are good, and do good; teach me Your statutes” (Psalm 119:68, NKJV). God is not merely good in what He does — He is good in what He is. Goodness is not an attribute He practises; it is the essence of who He is. And when we are filled with His Spirit, that same goodness begins to flow through us into the world around us.
Jesus connected this directly to our witness: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, NKJV). Our goodness is never meant to draw attention to ourselves. It is a signpost pointing straight to God. When people encounter genuine goodness in a believer — integrity without an agenda, kindness without conditions, uprightness when no one is watching — something in them recognises it as supernatural.
And it is supernatural. We cannot produce this goodness through willpower or self-improvement. Paul reminds us: “do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2, NKJV). Transformation is the Holy Spirit’s work. Our part is surrender.
Friend, as we yield, He produces in us what we could never manufacture ourselves. Goodness that is genuine. Goodness that endures. Goodness that looks unmistakably like Jesus.
Let us live for His glory — and let His goodness shine through us today.
