Living Above Poverty: Diligent, Trusting, Generous

General

Poverty is a reality that touches many lives, and as followers of Christ, we cannot look past it. But the Bible offers us more than sympathy for those in lack — it offers wisdom, promise, and a God who provides.

Proverbs 22:7 is a sober observation: “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender” (NKJV). Debt is bondage. God’s design for His people is freedom — the freedom to give generously, to serve without financial chains, to live with open hands.

Part of God’s wisdom for that freedom is diligence. Proverbs 21:5 says: “The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty” (NKJV). God honours faithful, thoughtful work. There is nothing unspiritual about having a plan, managing money wisely, or working with care and consistency.

But diligence without God at the centre is just striving. Jesus settles the priority clearly in Matthew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (NKJV). The provision follows the seeking. When God is first — genuinely first, not just in our words but in how we steward our time, our resources, and our trust — He takes responsibility for the rest.

And there is a third dimension: generosity. James 1:27 reminds us that “pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world” (NKJV). Living above poverty is never just about our own comfort. God’s provision flows through us. Those who give find that the hand of God does not close on the generous.

Friend, bring your finances before God. Work diligently, seek Him first, and hold what He gives you with an open hand.

May God’s provision and wisdom be yours today. Amen.
